  • With so many options available in this city, why take this class?
Rico’s specific methods are blended from his experiences with Meisner, Fitzmaurice, Michael Chekhov and more. With 30 years of experience as a theater director, a professor in a performing arts school for a decade, his own proper conservatory training and classes with independent teachers, he brings expertise and variety to the classroom. What’s more, his own early technical struggles and blocks led him to a journey of discovery where he found what was universal in the best training anywhere: Brain, Body, Being. We explore how all of those things are practiced and engaged on an individual level.
  • Is this a standard scene study class?
In short: Yes & No. While scenes are a large point of focus, we’ll also work on: Connection - Breathing/Listening Access to inner life via the above Physical awareness in both character and storytelling Scene Work & Monologues (Analysis and bringing choices to life) For Directors: Find some actors in class. Work on your skills w critique For Singers: Work on the interpretation (the “Acting” of the song) *Note: there is no accompanist. So if you sing, please provide the music Specific coaching/adjustments - What do you need today?
  • What does an average class look like?
As with most private classes, we meet as a group and usually start the class with group exercises. After grounding ourselves, groups, pairs or individuals will have a chance to work on specific things such as scenes, monologues or songs. In order to have your piece worked on the class, you have to sign up at the end of the previous class or the beginning of the current class to a list. We'll work in the order of the list. Time will be taken as needed on each piece before moving on to the next person on the list.
  • Do I have to provide my own scenes for a class?
Scenes and monologues will be file if needed but we strongly encourage you to bring the material you feel needs work. Additionally, consider bringing new monologues or scenes you feel might need a fresh look. If you are looking for a specific piece or type of character, let us know and we'll try to point you in the right direction.
  • How do you choose who works on material for the class?
Ideally, everyone will get to work on their material. The order in which that happens will be with a sign-up sheet at the end of the previous class and the beginning of the current class. Be prepared with your material when your name comes up!
  • How long are the classes?
The classes in the 10-week program are (3) three hours long. Please plan accordingly to arrive on time as we will start class with group exercises . We all know how the subway can be! One-on-One Sessions are (1) one hour long, both In Person and Online. Self-Tape Sessions are (45) minutes long. You can check out more here.
  • What happens if I’m coming late to class?
Send us an email (ACACTINGSTUDIO@GMAIL.COM) so we can plan ahead, not only the material we’re going to work on but as consideration for your other scene partners! We urge you to plan to be on time but in case your name is called from the work list, you’ll unfortunately lose your spot to work on your material and be pushed down to the end of the list if there is time at the end of class.
